WarnerMedia has provided an update on how HBO Max is performing from a subscriber perspective, while the company has also revealed how many new movies it’s planning to produce for the service in the next year.
Starting with the subscriber numbers, HBO Max now has 47 million subscribers in the US and 67.5 million globally. These numbers are up by 10.7 million and 12 million over the past year, respectively.
The company also specified that the average revenue per HBO Max and HBO subscriber was $11.90. Looking ahead, WarnerMedia is expecting to reach between 70-73 million global HBO Max/HBO subscribers by the end of the year.
Speaking to analysts as part of WarnerMedia’s earnings release where these numbers were announced, CEO Jason Kilar revealed that the company plans to produce 10 movies in 2022 that will debut exclusively on HBO Max, according to The Hollywood Reporter. The idea is that these will help drive subscriber growth. No release dates for these movies have been announced, however, nor do we even know what they are.
At the same time, Kilar stressed that, “The motion picture format absolutely matters,” pointing out that Godzilla vs. Kong was a big success in cinemas with $463 million worldwide at the box office. These types of tentpole films are expected to continue and be shown in theaters, while some of the movies that WarnerMedia produces will only be available on HBO Max.
All of WarnerMedia’s 2021 films will play in both cinemas and on HBO Max, and this includes Dune, which recently got its first full-length trailer. Other high-profile films coming this year from WarnerMedia include The Suicide Squad, The Matrix 4, The Many Saints of Newark, and Cry Macho.
